Lander on Public Plaza Idea

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Jole asked our councilmember Brad Lander what he thought about turning the newly widened sidewalks in front of Walgreens into a plaza. Here is his response:

Thanks so much for this great idea.  My office was very pleased to work with DOT on the widening of the sidewalk to promote pedestrian safety, and we would be very happy to work with the community on the idea of adding benches, street trees, and/or other features that would help transform this into a plaza.  As we have discussed, Kensington needs additional open and community space — and while this one isn’t that big, it is very well located right in the heart of the community.

We will reach out to the relevant City agencies to begin exploring this opportunity.  It is likely, of course, that we will encounter some obstacles along the way.  But we look very forward to working with you, Kensington Prospect readers, and other Kensington community members to try to make it reality.

Thank you! Now, dear neighbors – how about sharing some ideas?

Plaza idea is great, and would really bring much needed leafy relief during summer. It could just be benches as trees like Ocean Parkway.

BTW, good pic of plaza example.

This is a very good idea. I know the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is on the cutting edge in developing public landscaping schema to work with the city (such as roadside and median flower and grass planting) that actually are sustainable and need very little upkeep in terms of water and other environmental resources, including people power )to avoid the pitfalls of some other plazas).

They advocate for seeds and plants that tolerate pollution and drought. I learned about this at an open house at the BBG this year –they really are a terrific resource! Could they be contacted to help in planning?

I think benches are a good idea too! And bike racks from cityracks.org –very easy to request. I’ve requested one for our area in Kensington already, where people use newly planted street trees for hitch up bikes…
