All Cleaned Up

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

We posted about the sorry state of the “Caton Greenway” just a couple of days ago, and this morning it was all cleaned up, bagged in orange garbage bags! Thank you!

This is great news and thank you to the people who made this happen.

That said, the streets of our neighborhood are still too trashy. I pick up litter and wrote to Brad Ladner about the dearth of public trash cans/surplus of trash on the streets.

But, what else can we do? I love my neighborhood and want it to be clean and free from litter. If you have any ideas, please let me know. I am happy to help!

      Wonderful!

I agree with Jeff. There are many pieces of litter on the sidewalks and in the tree pits in the Church/Mcdonald area.

Also, sometimes the public litter baskets have household garbage in them and are filled to overflowing; we need more of the enclosed baskets with narrow-tops that prevent anything large from being put in them.

One of my pet peeves is the continuous accumulation of trash which is stuck at the bottom of the fence in the Astoria Federal Bank’s one-car parking space adjoining the bank on McDonald Ave. Over the years, I have spoken to the Bank’s management, etc., to keep this area clean but to no avail. It’s an eyesore!

Hear, hear, on Astoria Fence. The school annex finally cleaned up its lot and fence, so on that strip Astoria Federal now stands out as the block’s eyesore.

I was pleasantly surprised, when exiting the B67 bus as it turned onto 7th Ave. and 20th St., to see a sanitation car parked at the corner and 3 employees cleaning up what perhaps was a tree pit. They had pulled out all the debris and weeds that had accumulated. Much appreciated!

      Hi,

I wanted to let people know that my group, NYC Community Cleanup, was responsible taking care of this eyesore situation, after being alerted to it by staff at Brad Lander’s office. We work in partnership with the court system to operate a daily work crew of people who are paying back to their community for a minor crime. Our goal is to make sure that their service is meaningful and beneficial to neighborhood residents. You can contact us to alert us about areas in need of cleanup (and see before and after pictures) by visiting our website, at http://www.cleanupnyc.org.

Whenever you see our orange trash bags (with our project logo and website printed on them), you know we’ve been doing a cleanup.
