Wines and Liquors

There are a fair amount of liquor stores in Kensington, but 127 Ditmas Ave is by far my favorite. In addition to your standard (around here, at least) liquors in novelty packaging – matryoshka dolls, AK-47s, horses – as well as Kedem wines and vodka, they offer a bit more, which gives them an edge over their competition.
They have the largest variety of Sovietskoye Champanskoye in the area, and the best prices. Most places start it at $7.99, but it’s $5.99 and up here. Sovietskoye Champanskoye doesn’t look or taste as cheap as it is, though I personally prefer the white variety to the red.

I filter cheap vodka to create infusions, which are a great crafty gift to give out for the holidays. This store has slightly more expensive bottom shelf, plastic jug, cheaper-than-Georgi vodka by $1 – $2 per 1.75 liters, but it requires fewer filtrations to remove the jet fuel taste than most varieties in that price range have.
The owners are helpful and knowledgeable – they directed me to a decent and cheap port wine for a pie recipe, and helped my brother pick out a cheap bottle of wine to impress his girlfriend’s family at Thanksgiving. Other liquor stores in the area recommended El Gato Negro for mulled wine, which ended up tasting like anti-freeze and vinegar.
In short, I recommend Wines and Liquors at 127 Ditmas Ave as a cut above their competitors. Their hours are 10 am – 10 pm on most days, though they close before the Sabbath on Fridays, and open at 5:30 pm on Saturdays.
