How Much Is Too Much for a Slice?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Pizza, especially in Brooklyn, may be the ultimate quick bite. If you’re hungry, don’t have much cash, and want something satisfying, a plain slice of pizza can really hit the spot. But as neighbor Frank Meuschke noted in an email last week, the price is on the rise:

I was walking home from Church (thanks to the Efferoo) late tonight, planning on stopping into Golden Farms for some milk. A little hungry I thought I might stop into Korner Pizza for a slice. I was shocked by the price of a slice. Three dollars! I’ve never seen that for junky pizza. Certainly not in Brooklyn for a day old slice waiting to be heated up.

He said it’ll go up from there. I complained, and left. Thanks to Golden Farm for holding down the price of things. Here’s what they were selling for $2.99: large Pollyo Ricotta, 16oz Pollyo mozzarella, and three kinds of natural breakfast cereals. All under three dollars.

I bought those instead.

The $3 price tag eventually led Frank to making his own pizza at home. But for those of us who still need the quick fix, how much are you willing to pay for a slice, and where is your favorite (or cheapest) in the neighborhood? Are you the type who will hike to Di Fara for a $5 slice that might be deemed objectionable by the DOH, or do you favor the 2 slices and a soda at Xpress for about $4? Let us know your pizza secrets!

It’s not even so much about the price (although that’s a big factor.)
Why do so many places serve crappy pizza. It really is not hard to do it right, especially when your business is built around it.
Also, if a pizza place is going to heat up a slice sitting around for more than 1/2 hour, how about taking at least 50¢ off?

My husband and I are completely amazed by how terrible Korner Pizza is– really in the bottom third of all pizza I think I’ve ever had (never the right consistency, no flavor, almost cold when you get it)– and how ridiculous the price is! And forget about ever getting delivery from them. We once waited almost TWO HOURS, and that was after being assured by everyone who knew better that it was futile to even try.

Xpress Pizza is actually pretty good, and the 2 sclies + drink is a good deal. We like Little Tonino’s, too; I forget their slice price because we always get a whole pie!

I’ll pay nearly any price for a fantastic slice; we’ve had our $35-$40 pies from Di Fara’s. But Korner Pizza? I wouldn’t pay 35 cents for theirs!!!

Can’t beat Rocky’s delicious huge vegetable pizza slice.  Chock full of veggies.  Very accomodating also.  It’s been $3.50 and hasn’t changed ‘yet’.

A pie from Rocky’s is 11 bucks, a pie from Korner is 19. GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK. And BTW, Korner owns most of the buildings on that strip including their own, so don’t want to hear any BS about the rent. They are just ripping people off and nothing else.

In our neighborhood, I’m perfectly willing to pay anywhere from 2 – 2.50 for a slice. 3 seems to high when everyone else is the lower range.

I will, on occasion, hike to Difara’s for 5 dollar slices. But it can’t be everyday street pizza.

I’m so glad you covered this and to read people’s comments. Interesting that they own that building too! I can’t figure out why in Kensington Brooklyn on Church Ave they are charging $3 for a slice. I like their slice but I find the price unbelievable and outrageous. Also a bit insulting. I hope another pizza place opens on that block selling pizza for $1!

I also like Rocky’s very much and their slices are $2.25.

Xpress Pizza has $2.00 slices and a great oven for crust.

I started making my own – and I agree – the low-fat mozerella at Golden Farm is my choice.  When I don’t have time though – it’s X-Press. The Mon/Tue special is appealling and I add my own extras (7.99 large cheese pizza/8 slices=3 or 4 meals).

Korner is definitely the worst pizza option in our neighborhood.  Xpress is the best, in my opinion.  That chicken bruscetta slice is unbelievable.
