Fat Tuesday

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Today is Fat Tuesday, which is, according to wikipedia, “the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. Related popular practices are associated with celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent.”

Pancakes are a traditional Fat Tuesday food. You can go to the blinaya, Russian Homemade Cuisine, at 505 Church Ave and pick up a pound of the blintzes of your choice – they are sadly unavailable in smaller increments.

If that sounds a bit too indulgent, you can pick up frozen blintzes at Gala Apple International on 18th Ave, or you could go the savory route and get frozen potato pancakes from there.

If you keep gluten free, another savory option would be to pick up gram (chickpea) flour and make pancakes with those – it’s sold at the Pharmacy on Coney Island Ave, as well as a fewer of the smaller grocery stores further south.
