Andrew’s Coffee Shop

Monday, January 17th, 2011

I’ve always liked lunch counters, and slowly I’m visiting the promising looking ones in the nabe. (Looks are important!) My test is eggs over easy, and good, strong black coffee.

Sunday I stopped in at Andrew’s for a second breakfast, at 901 Church Avenue at Coney Island Avenue, northeast corner. It has a window counter, newsstand and cigarette display behind a plastic shield, with a lunch counter/kitchen hidden to the rear. Oh, and a TV.

There were 4 of us there: owner and cook Hensley Peters from Grenada; to my right a Russian man, who said he ate curried beef over rice there regularly, and another man from Guyana. His plate was empty.

It was a cold day. The place was steaming and intimate enough for the 4 of us to get into a conversation. At the window counter, 3 more DOE workers were chatting and watching the street.

My eggs were just as I ordered: over easy with very runny yellow yolks.

When I was growing up here as a kid there were plenty of “lunch counters” all over Church Avenue and McDonald. Except back in the 60′s and 70′s they were more likely to be occupied by the neighborhood “bookie” who took numbers.
