Robbery and Attempted Rape on Subway at Fort Hamilton Station

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

A scary attack of a woman on the F train at Fort Hamilton Parkway took place at 2:25am on Wednesday.

The suspect, pictured in the sketch here, approached the victim while she was riding aboard a southbound F train and put his hand around her throat while displaying a knife. He then demanded the victim’s property and removed her pocketbook containing an iPhone and money.

Then the man demanded that the woman remove her underwear, but no sexual assault was committed.

He fled the train and is seen on video crossing the northbound platform at the Fort Hamilton Parkway station.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 45-50 years old, 5-feet 10-inches tall, 200 pounds, stocky build, bald, and has scruffy facial hair. The suspect was last seen wearing a maroon sweater, dark colored pants, and dark colored work shoes.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577. Police say all calls are kept strictly confidential.

This is a scary story – thanks for reporting on it, KPB.

A few years ago, a female friend of mine was held up at gunpoint just outside the Ft. Hamilton Pkwy stop underneath the overpass between the playground and school (Ft. Hamilton end). I mention this just to let neighbors know that that exit is fairly secluded if there aren’t a lot of people getting off the train at the time you are.  Especially late at night, in my opinion it’s wiser to ride one more stop to Church and walk down Church then back in the direction of Ft. Hamilton to get where you’re going, because Church at least has businesses open late and the exit of the subway isn’t secluded. For what it’s worth in unsolicited safety advice…

I’m very sorry for the woman this happened to on Wednesday.

The headlines on this story say RAPE, but all the write-ups–if you read them closely including here–say “no sexual assault was committed.”
Let’s not exaggerate what happened.  Bad enough as is. She was robbed at knifepoint and asked to remove her underwear.  People are freaked out, including the husbands and boyfriends of women in the neighborhood.

It’s a known fact that many criminals who ask victims to remove their underwear are doing it for completely non-sexual reasons.

I appreciate that you don’t want to fan the flames, and news reports should be careful to be correct in terminology. I also think we don’t know enough about what happened to cause the attack to end and the man to flee before a sexual violation occured. But it seems fair to assume that any woman asked to remove their underwear by a man with a knife around their neck on a train would think they were about to be attacked sexually, and that readers could benefit from this news story reminder to be on alert if travelling alone during less populated times of day.

If I were the victim, I’d feel terribly traumatized by the circumstances described, and I’m glad to hear it did not go further.

The reports I’ve read say attempted rape — which this may or may not have been. I haven’t seen the police report. It’s safe to say that being asked to remove your underwear is sexually violating, and that puts it on par with the other attacks that have involved fondling and grabbing at a variety of body parts.

We associate these attacks because they are part of a pattern that demonstrates that sexual assault (of any variety) is permissible and perpetrators won’t get caught. If this is the 3rd or 4th man committing *known* sexual assaults in Windsor Terrace/Park Slope/Sunset Park/Bay Ridge/Kensington that’s enough to demonstrate that perpetrators are feeling emboldened. That’s scary.

And while I realize that husbands and boyfriends are freaked out, they need to do something with that freaking out other than just try to protect their wives and girlfriends (I have neither a husband nor a boyfriend or really any umbrella of male privilege, which is true of many women living in Brooklyn.) How about volunteering with any of the groups offering escorts home? Or being visibly present on the street? Or, even more importantly, helping to stop rape culture at its most insidious: teaching their friends, siblings, fathers, and kids around them that women shouldn’t have to protect themselves from rapists? Men just shouldn’t rape.

It’s time for everyone, including men in our communities, to take responsibility and up the ante in figuring out how we can stop these sorts of crimes now and in the future.

I definitely agree. This CAN’T be happening in this neighborhood. It HAS to stop. Baseball bats do wonders.
